Spike definition in drama9/14/2023 ![]() Rocker-turned-filmmaker Fred Durst (“The Longshots”) of Limp Bizkit directed and provides an audio commentary. “The Education of Charlie Banks” (Anchor Bay $29.99, DVD June 30) with Jesse Eisenberg (“Adventureland”), Jason Ritter (“W.”) and Eva Amurri (“The Banger Sisters”) in an R-rated melodrama about an Ivy League student whose past comes back to haunt him when a violent friend visits and integrates himself into the young man’s life. They demand that it be repaid if she wants to see her child again. “The Betrayed” (MGM $26.99, DVD June 30) with Melissa George (HBO’s “In Treatment”) in an unrated thriller about a woman whose son is abducted by kidnappers who insist that her husband has stolen millions from a crime syndicate. If your local outlet doesn’t stock them, the DVD offerings can be mail-ordered by calling 80 or going to the Web site or, unless otherwise noted. The following DVD titles recently landed at a video store near you. ![]() “Jonas Brothers: The Concert Experience: Deluxe Extended Movie” is also available in a regular DVD ($29.99) with the flat theatrical version of the film and a two-disc flat DVD ($32.99) that includes a digital version. The G-rated movie features guest appearances by Demi Lovato and Taylor Swift. There’s also a featurette (“Get Up Close and Personal”) offering an intimate look at the brothers. The package includes four pairs of 3-D glasses. The limited-edition combo pack contains both the 3-D and flat versions of the movie in high definition on Blu-ray Disc, a standard-definition DVD and a digital copy. Hard-core fans of pop-singing siblings Kevin, Joe and Nick should enjoy seeing them pop off the screen during “Jonas Brothers: The Concert Experience - Deluxe Extended Movie in 3-D: 3-Disc Combo Pack” (Disney $44.99 June 30), which includes four songs not seen in the theatrical version. In addition, this anniversary edition contains 1989 footage from the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, where the film had a triumphant screening. The extras include a retrospective documentary (“Do the Right Thing: 20 Years Later”) 11 newly discovered scenes cut from the final version of the film new commentary by Lee a making-of documentary the filmmaker’s personal video footage from the set the original theatrical trailer and TV spots and additional commentary by cinematographer Ernest Dickerson, production designer Wynn Thomas and Spike Lee’s sister, actress Joie Lee. Here’s what “Do the Right Thing” sparked: smart conversations about racial issues. In the cinematic universe created by Lee for the film, blacks live under the heels of white power brokers who offer minorities little chance of attaining higher goals. The $6.5 million racial drama takes a strong look at black-and-white relations over a blistering hot 24-hour period in a one-block area of Brooklyn’s Bedford Stuyvesant, and it pits an African-American pizza-delivery worker (Lee) against his racist Italian-American boss (Danny Aiello of “Leon, the Professional”). Two decades ago, some quick-to-judge industry observers predicted that Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” would cause riots in the streets. ![]()
